Salco Products, a freight equipment company, serves the chemical transport industry with the Hazarsolve product line. However, their standard PVC products aren't rated for highly corrosive chemicals. To better serve the hydrochloric acid industry, I recreated their standard products with acid-resistant materials and drew up technical drawings for production.
Redesigning Products for the Hydrochloric Acid Industry
Product:
Transfer Pump
For the loading and unloading of tanker cars, Hazarsolve sells a transfer pump.
I replaced the PVC pipes with Teflon-lined steel pipes designed to handle corrosive loads. The pipes are mounted to a support frame, so the added weight wasn't an issue.

-
I did vendor research to find the best option for a new basket filter
-
I modified the support brackets to accommodate the new pipe layout and dimensions
-
I made additional revisions to the design based on evolving project requirements

Product:
Waste Fume Scrubber
Filling a chemical tank displaces a large volume of air, which can be laced with harmful vapors from the chemical being poured. Hazarsolve’s line of vapor scrubbers run the displaced air through a filter before venting.
Given the size of the pipes involved (the central column has a 14" diameter), I opted for HDPE piping. More corrosion resistant then PVC and lighter and available in larger sizes than steel pipes.
-
I ensured that all bolt holes, flanges, and ports were at the correct height to interface with other Salco equipment
-
I handled the design of custom, extended length HDPE flanges
-
PVC is much easier to bond than HDPE, so I researched alternative joining methods and determined the correct welding method for each seam and joint.
